Several weeks passed by, Jax refused to tell Heron what had happened, only that London chose to stay out in the forest. Her father forced the move, but Heron didn't seem to care any more. The wedding plans were going strong, the only hitch in the plan was Jax, who refused to leave Heron's side and shredded two of the wedding dresses brought in for her inspection. Heron's mother refused to go near the gryphon. Heron didn't care. She never did anything, only spoke when spoken to and barely at anything at mealtimes.

Jax tried to cheer her up with everything in his arsenal, but he knew the cause: London.

The black gryphon watched her stare out the window. The view was her family's front lawn, a beautiful expanse of cultured trees and trimmed hedges, with a few small fountains and a large statue dotting the place here and there. Jax knew his heart-sister saw none of it. The door opened and the gryphon raise his head, expecting to hiss at the servants that refused to leave his Heron alone, but an elder man stood there instead.

"Lord Avorshan!" Jax whistled in surprise, sitting up. He didn't expect a gryphoneer to come visit them, let alone the head of the entire order. "We didn't expect you."

"I'm aware of that, Jaxenar," the elder lord replied with a grim smile. Jax's eyebrow fluffs went up at the use of his full name and unintentionally followed Lord Avorshan's gaze to the window seat. Heron hadn't turned around.

Jax sighed and the Lord of Gryphons turned back to him. "I came to speak with you anyhow, Jax," he continued. "As Heron is getting married, her life is turning away from the duties of a gryphoneer. I came to give you the choice to rebond." Jax stood up in surprise.

"You'd..what? I didn't think that was even possible!" Jas was speechless, his body shook. Avorshan frowned.

"Yes, it is, Jaxenar," he replied calmly and crossed his arms. "The council thought you'd be pleased." Avorshan emphasized the word 'council' slightly, but Jax didn't even notice.

"She's already lost part of her heart when the bloody drak went feral, and now you're asking me to leave her too? I'm the only thing keeping her alive at this point. You think this marriage is HER choice? Her father has shoved her around since the day I met her and before. I chose her to get her out of this life. Have you met her betrothed? He's an asshat and beyond. He INSULTED her to her face!"

Avorshan raised his hands, but the gryphon continued, pacing across the white carpet. "Jax," he warned.

"He doesn't treat her like she's an icekin. He treats her like a trophy. Heron deserves more than that. She--"

"Jaxenar! Be silent, son!" A pale gray male gryphon bellowed from the door. He glared across the carpet at Jax, who stopped and stared in surprise. The gryphon resettled his feathers and harrumphed. Avorshan smiled ever so slightly. "I came to give you the choice, Jax. I'm not saying you need to."

Jax sighed and shook his head. "I can't. I wouldn't want to, even if she was happy." The black gryphon shook his head again. "I'm sorry, Father, but my place is with Heron, no matter where she is." He looked over at the gray, who sighed and nodded. He turned and clicked down the hall. Avorshan nodded to Jax. "The choice remains yours." He glanced over at Heron, who still hadn't moved, and sighed. "I wish there was something I could do to help, Jax. I really do. You know we've had scouts over that area and found no sign of the drak. Plantdraks are impossible to find." Jax nodded. Avorshan tipped his head and slipped back out the door.

Jax exhaled explosively and turned, walking over to Heron. He sat on the soft carpet next to her feet and put his head in her lap. Her hand moved to his neck, but didn't start petting. Jax sighed. A few minutes later, the door creaked again. Jax didn't bother to look up until a familiar chirrup came hesitantly. Heron sat up like a shot and stared at the dirty plantdrak sitting in the middle of the pristine white carpet. London chirruped again and tilted his head.

"London!" Jax moved out of the way as Heron staggered to her drak and collapsed on the big male. London licked her face of the salty tears and chirruped again, happily. "You…you came back!"

Jax stood and sighed in relief. At least now, she wouldn't act like an animated doll. His Heron had returned. He purred and pressed against them both from behind Heron, catching her between the two males. "Oof!" She let out a rusty laugh and hugged Jax's head to her.

"Can we go home now?" Jax asked her. Heron pushed London's face away from licking her and nodded. "We're going home." London did a little jig, dropping more dirt and leaves on the carpet and chirruped happily. Heron slipped up to Jax's back, wrapping her arms around him and hugged him tight. "Think you can carry us both, Jax?"

"To the end of the world if I have to," the gryphon replied and headed for the open window.

"Where do you think you're going?" Heron's father burst in as servants scattered to try to pick up the dirt left by the drak. Jax turned and hissed. "I'm going home, Father. I'm a gyphoneer!" Before she could say another word, Jax grabbed London and dived out the window. His great wings snapped open, catching the wind and forced them upwards. Distantly, Heron saw her father at the balcony, actually shaking a fist. Jax shrieked into the air.

"He can't fight the gryphoneers if you back them, love," Jax shouted. Heron nodded and hugged her heart-brother. London gave a shriek to match Jax's, and Heron laughed as they headed back to her small gryphoneer's flat.

Awww, yay, London's back. I liked that, it shows how attached she is to him.
