Nature's Call
Seren limped into the large cavern and gasped at the large dragon. Inaria, they'd said her name was. She was beautiful! Her father put his hand on her back and she looked back at him. He smiled and nodded to her to take her place. Out of many others, she'd been chosen to come see the clutch, to see if the dragon mother, or one of the eggs, took a liking to her. Her best friend, Jargo, had had his chance a few days ago, but Inaria had stayed silent.
Inhaling slowly, Seren limped closer. Ever since the accident nearly 10 years ago, she'd limped. She'd been been trailing after her father, deep in the woods, wanting to see what he did every day.

A booted foot kicked her out of an unusually pleasant dream and she woke with a start, trying not to curl to protect her stomach. She scrambled back, hitting the wall of to avoid a second kick, this time aimed at her head. "I'm awake! I'm awake!" The foot retreated and she heard a grunt. With a sigh, Ananias shook her black ragged hair out of her eyes and sat up, trying to avoid the moving mass of other drudges. Blinking sleep out of her eyes, one of the smaller non-humans staggered into her, but was pulled to her paws by the overseer and shoved through the door. “Get to work!” the man growled. The others didn't

Awakening
Consciousness returned slowly to the young woman as she tried to remember what exactly had just happened. And where the hell she was. It was dark but Mari couldn't hear the nighttime noises of cars and trucks through her broken window. Her apartment stood right next to a major highway, running right through her hometown. Day in, day out, and all through the night, the sounds of traffic intruded into her home. Construction workers were always nearby, fixing roadways, signs, or landscaping that really didn't need to be fixed. At night, Mari always heard her next door neighbors having their nightly party, speakers on their bass

Firewolf CH01
Valin Tryvale walked through the door of his small, two-room house, and on into the kitchen area. His bushy, gray-peppered hair was still in a tangle, having given up trying to comb it. His six-foot-four silhouette easily framed the doorway, as he paused to check the timid, little plant just inside the door that he had been nurturing all winter. Leaves were just beginning to appear on the trees bordering the house. The awakening of nature's beauty should bring out the best, he mused. With a final pat, he continued inside, but not before he heard the whisper of a sigh from across the road. He chuckled at the lost expressions on the women's fac

Left Alone CH00
To say I had an odd childhood is to oversimplify this story greatly. The beginning of my story would have to start in the middle of a forest. Many highlights in my life have led me to many different forests. When people mention large forests as dark, silent, and gloomy, I am never sure if I want to correct them, or simply leave them in the dark, so to speak. The many voices I have encountered throughout my life enjoy most humans' misconceptions of nature and her denizens. Scientists have believed for many years that wild animals are more afraid of people than people are afraid of them. I have it on unarguable authority that animals do not fee

Matrivani Chronicles CH01
What am I doing here? Kaligan Firehawk asked herself as she unconsciously tugged the hem of her dark blue Imperial uniform for the hundredth time, and winced as her back muscles spasmed from overuse. I should be back on my ship, playing chess with Que.
Kali and her partner, Que, had just gotten back from their five-month trip to the haunter homeworld of New Iceland. Que's home had been ransacked by an offending clan, and he and Kali had been two of the hundreds to volunteer to help rebuild before the winter snows came. This had been Kali's first time seeing one of the levantinians, whose near-effortless telekinetic abilities made them in hig

1 Introduction
Once upon a time
in a land far away.
Only a few simple words
Yet they are said so often.
Why only once?
And why so far away?
Why not right here,
where the land is green
and the sky is blue.
Here there is flowers below
and trees above.
Dragons burping sparkles
and unicorns farting rainbows.
But we're still left with
Happily ever after and
once upon a time
will never come again.

The Man of Many Names - Part4
Several weeks passed. Bait found himself in the library more often than not. Occasionally, he'd see Kirin, perusing some other book, but remaining quiet unless directly spoken to. There were a few others he saw every so often, but none seemed friendly enough, even when Bait gave them an encouraging smile. After a while, he stopped trying. He learned the asian dragon, or lung, was more like unto a snake. The long mane rippling down its spine topped off at the end of the tail in a majestic plume. The tiny, interlocking scales were soft and round, rasping against one another almost silently as it ghosted through the air. Asian lungs could fly wi

The Man of Many Names - Part3
The man woke slowly, groggily as if he'd been drugged, but his thoughts were too muddled to comprehend the room he was in. Slowly, the walls stopped weeping and the rushing in his ears faded to quiet. He cracked his eyelids open again and blinked. The light wasn't too bright and his head wasn't throbbing like it should have been, but the walls held blank woven tapestries, there was a tiny bolthole at the far end of the small room. The simple stone floor - stone, like some medieval castle - had a small carpet Bait was laying on, a small nightstand in the corner with the softly-glowing lamp and nothing else. Bait couldn't see where a door was a

The Man of Many Names - Ch1
To start with Dagran's life of the Nighthawks is to pick both the softest and the hardest of them all. Not many know who he really is, or who he was, though Dag is certainly the most normal of them all. But he certainly wasn't successful. He hadn't always been a medical technician. Dagran had tried it all, from demolitions to computer tech. He'd failed, earning him the umpteenth nickname of Useless - the one that had stuck. 8606's first nickname had been Loner and his brothers had never been the closest of batches. Dag was more of a lone wolf than most, preferring to actively avoid the others and do his work on his own. A few of his batch tri
The brilliant golden orb of the sun slowly sank into the sea of violets and blues. The night its their cool shade across the valley and nightbirds trilled as they caught their first meals of the evening. Cicadas came alive, their voices melding together into a single unceasing drone. Deer peeked out of the forest to graze on the sun-warmed grass and a few rabbits could be seen near their den; a mother watching protectively over her little ones as they romped.
The shadow of a large cat was seen briefly in the brush, but he simply passed by the watchful deer. An unusually large rabbit with a long scorpion tail squeezed herself out of her hole
The long, dark tunnel twisted and turned, quickly growing colder the further in it went. Smaller tunnels splayed off from the large main corridor, branching off into darkness, though most of them were dead-ends. All manner of critters and dark things lurked in the shadows of the caves, peeking out at visitors and travelers alike, watching. The further one goes, however, the more they feel a Presence watching them. The deeper one goes, the more aware they are, it becomes a solid feeling, pressing on them.
If one means harm to any inhabitants, the pressure will grow until it becomes a physical pain. Blood will begin to flow from extremities li
Shiloh waited at the predetermined grass lot for the specialized trailer coming from one of her fellow stables. The Vale was a fairly distant island from what Zalthas had told her, but Shi hadn't had a chance to go visit. From Zalthas, she'd learned a lot about the Vale and its inhabitants. The unique snake-like breed had intrigued her, but she'd just been too busy with her own Valley to be able to travel much lately. Shiloh leaned her head back against the truck seat and sighed. Her hand brushed a thick head and she glanced down at the dog in the passenger seat next to her. The blue eyes of her kiernos, Solaris looked up at her and Shi coudl
Whatever it was, whenever he turned around, there was nothing there. Try as he might, he could find nothing in the room, no matter how hard he searched. He slithered over to the bay window and sighed. Looking out at the distant dawn, he could see the servants already up and moving about. Dismissing the coming day, he turned back to the darkened room. Letting his eyes adjust, he once again scanned the room with all four slitted eyes. He closed the top two and shook his head.
Was he going crazy?
His manservant came in. Like any other day. Seren blinked and slithered over, allowing the man to do his job. His scales had a tendency to shift colo
